Viareggio is the major tourist and seaside resort in Versilia, with a fine beach highly popular with both Italian and foreign tourists, who flock in, in winter too, to watch the parades of enormous trucks carrying the paper-mâché giants that form the distinctive feature of its famous carnival.

The town lies between the majestic Appuan Alps and the sea and is bounded by two extensive pinewoods.
